I totally understand that frustrating feeling of waking to the realization that you’re the only person in your neighborhood without electricity. You’ll rush to your meter box and behold it’s on. What then could be the problem.
After starting at your meter for a while it Dawn’s on you. You’re out of unit. Your credit has finished and you need to recharge but it is 2am in the night. What do you do?
A lot of changes have been made to the power sector in Nigeria after its privatization few years ago. One of these is the introduction of the Prepaid meter, or the Digital Electronic Prepaid Meter (as many of you would like to call it.)
These meters are unique to each customer and they are helpful in may ways. For one, they enable each individual regulate his or her own energy consumption at any given time by either turning off his meter or turning it on.
With the advent of the prepaid meter system, it is now possible to borrow credit from PHED when you run out of unit. Yes. And it is quite easy too.
Borrowing credit can be done using simple short code. All you need to do is input the code into your meter an viola, you will automatically be credited with 5 unit which will be deducted from your next recharge. Wanna learn how to do this?

HOW TO RECHARGE YOUR PREPAID METER.
First thing first, you must configure your smartcard at any disco outlet or Phed office closest to you. Most of you still call it Nepa Office or Phcn Office. This is the first step every customer takes after getting a meter. This configuration customizes your meter for you only.
After configuration you can then proceed to recharge your meter using your smartcard.
To recharge follow the steps below:
- Go to any Phed office closest to you and present them with your smartcard.
- Request for credit to your meter. You will have to pay a certain amount of money.
- After payment your account will be credited and you will be given a slip containing 20 digits code.
- Enter this code into your meter when you get home.
- While inputting the code observe the UIU LCD screen to ensure you are entering the correct digits.
- If the token you entered is correct the screen will show ACCEPTED or CREDITED. If the code entered is incorrect FAILED or REJECTED will be displayed.
- If CREDITED appears then you will automatically be connected and will have light in your house. Note that the amount of unit you will receive depends on the amount of money you pay.
HOW TO BORROW UNIT FROM PHED PREPAID METER?
Now that you are familiar with recharging your meter, let me tell you the simple code for borrowing credit from PHED. Like i said, it is a simple code. Just input it and you are good to go. When you enter the code you will automatically be credited with 5 units. Don’t get too excited, it is not charity. This 5 unit will be deducted from your next recharge. Check out the code below.
Simply go to your meter and dial the following code…
If the code is typed in properly you will hear a little beep and your meter will be immediately credited.
For Disco meter users:
- Text ‘*Disco*,*meter-no*amount to borrow*pin#’ string to 946 (not case sensitive) e.g. *PH*01423650078*2000*1234#
i. If customer is not eligible for service, the customer will receive an SMS message “You are currently not eligible for this service. To find out how you can be eligible, visit www.powernow.com.ng/xx or dial *946#”
ii. If the customer is eligible for service or has outstanding balance that has not reached their approved credit limit, the customer will be sent a message saying “Hello! Your request has been received and is being processed. You will receive a response shortly. Thank you”
iii. If incorrect string of required information is sent by the customer ,customer is sent a message saying “Invalid input. Correct format is “*Disco*meter no.*amount*pin#”
iv. If meter has an outstanding balance on it (equal to approved credit limit), customer is sent a message saying “You are yet to make payment for last amount borrowed. Please make payment at *946# or www.powernow.com.ng to be able to borrow power.”
FOR PREPAID – If customer sends correct information, is eligible for the service and has no outstanding balance, customer will receive transaction details via SMS with the following information: ’*Power Token*DISCO*Amount Borrowed* Charge Applicable*Ref.No. 45678923889876541891, EKO DISCO, 5000, 850, Ref 001/SMS
vi. For Postpaid – If customer sends correct information, is eligible for the service and has no outstanding balance, customer will receive transaction details via SMS with the following information’’*Power Token*DISCO*Amount Borrowed* Charge Applicable*Ref.No. 45678923889876541891, EKO DISCO, 5000, 850, Ref 001/SMS
