“Lol Mom said I still need to get a degree…” Rema gains admission into UNILAG
One of Nigeria’s fast rising music youngsters, Rema has recently gained admissions to study at the prestigious University of Lagos.
On Friday, January 7, 2022, the musician announced everything through his Twitter account:
“What if I told y’all I got an admission into Unilag? Lol Mom said I still need to get a degree sigh, oh well see you guys in class!” he tweeted.
The Mavin Record label signee did not reveal what he will study at the university.
Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema or Remmy Boy, is a 21 year old Nigerian singer, rapper and songwriter from Benin City. He became well-known after releasing the single ‘Iron Man’ which appeared on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist.
Rema was born into a Christian family in Benin City. He grew up singing and rapping while in secondary school. He attained his primary and secondary school education in Ighile group of schools, Edo State
In 2018, Rema posted a viral freestyle on Instagram to D’Prince’s track “Gucci Gang”. The post caught the attention of D’Prince who flew him to Lagos to offer a record deal. Rema signed a record deal with D’Prince’s Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records, in 2019.
He released his self-titled debut EP Rema in 2019, which peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria. On 21 May 2019, Jonzing World, and Mavin’s released the music video of “Dumebi”, a major breakout song from his self-titled EP, featuring a cameo appearance from Diana Eneje. The video was directed by Ademola Falomo and currently has 48 million views on YouTube. In May 2021, Rema announced he will be calling his sound “Afrorave”, a subgenre of Afrobeats.
Rema joins the ranks of celebrities such as Davido who returned to university to obtain a degree despite their celebrity status. Davido graduated from Babcock University in 2015 with a degree in Music.
